We all know that going green is becoming more and more important every day. However, not everyone can make the bigger changes like buying a hybrid car. We want to… Read more

We all know that going green is becoming more and more important every day. However, not everyone can make the bigger changes like buying a hybrid car. We want to help you take the smaller, more affordable steps to going green in your home today.

1. Change the way you shop for groceries. These days everyone knows about reusable bags when you shop, but there’s more ways to incorporate reusable packaging in the grocery store. Bring some plastic containers with you and ask your butcher to package your meat in those instead
of wrapping it in paper or plastic. Another great option is to find some reusable produce bags. You can find these online, and they are usually very
light bags with a drawstring top. This way you can still keep your veggies clean, (instead of just setting them in your cart) without wasting bags.

2. Look into adding a recycling service to your trash service. Depending on your area and your trash company, the price is often not
much more on top of what you already pay. If you cannot afford to have it actually picked up, think about getting a bin for your house to set aside your recycling. Chances are there is a recycling facility near your home, at least for bottles and cans. Then, you can bring your recycling to them once a month, and actually pick up a little cash in the process. This will be helpful for those product packages that you cannot replace with something reusable.

3. Do your best to use less household paper products. Try getting rid of your paper towels and replacing them with regular kitchen
towels. Make sure you’re using your real dishes, utensils, and napkins instead of paper ones. Even though these paper products offer some convenience, it isn’t worth the environmental impact that these non-decomposable products have. For the products that can’t eliminate in paper form, go for the environmentally friendly versions. Many companies offer green paper products today at a similar price.

4. Opt for green cleaning products when you shop. When it comes to chemicals, the production causes so many environmental problems. Many
green cleaning products are manufactured with the efforts to have a smaller carbon footprint, so try to take the steps to support these efforts. Many cleaning products including laundry detergent, all-purpose cleaners, and window cleaners come in environmental friendly options that are actually usually around the same price as the regular versions.

5. Remember to unplug everything when you’re not using it. Saving energy will not only help your electric bills, it will save energy as a
whole for the environment. Even if your electronics are turned off or not in use, they still use a small amount of energy. Why continue to use energy when these items are not even in use?

Hopefully these tips will help you to make small changes in your home to become more environmentally friendly. Feel free to contact
Environmental Preservation Solutions if you have any questions, or need help making these changes!

that you should know they are found in Executive Order 13101—Greening the Government
through Waste Prevention, Recycling, and Federal Acquisition

Sec. 201. ‘‘Environmentally preferable’’ means products or services that have a lesser or reduced effect on human health and the environment when compared with competing products or services that serve the same purpose. This comparison may consider raw materials acquisition, production, manufacturing, packaging, distribution, reuse, operation, maintenance, or disposal of the product or service.

Sec. 202. ‘‘Executive agency’’ or ‘‘agency’’ means an executive agency as defined in 5 U.S.C. 105. For the purpose of this order, military
departments, as defined in 5 U.S.C. 102, are covered under the auspices of the Department of Defense.

Sec. 203. ‘‘Postconsumer material’’ means a material or finished product that has served its intended use and has been discarded for disposal or recovery, having completed its life as a consumer item. ‘‘Postconsumer material’’ is a part of the broader category of ‘‘recovered material.’’ 49644 Federal Register / Vol. 63, No. 179 / Wednesday, September 16, 1998 / Presidential Documents

Sec. 204. ‘‘Acquisition’’ means the acquiring by contract with appropriated funds for supplies or services (including construction) by and for
the use of the Federal Government through purchase or lease, whether the supplies or services are already in existence or must be created, developed, demonstrated, and evaluated. Acquisition begins at the point when agency needs are established and includes the description of requirements to satisfy agency needs, solicitation and selection of sources, award of contracts, contract financing, contract performance, contract administration, and those technical and management functions directly related to the process of fulfilling agency needs by contract.

Sec. 205. ‘‘Recovered materials’’ means waste materials and by-products that have been recovered or diverted from solid waste, but such
term does not include those materials and by-products generated from, and commonly reused within, an original manufacturing process (42 U.S.C. 6903 (19)).

Sec. 206. ‘‘Recyclability’’ means the ability of a product or material to be recovered from, or otherwise diverted from, the solid waste
stream for the purpose of recycling.

Sec. 207. ‘‘Recycling’’ means the series of activities, including collection, separation, and processing, by which products or other materials
are recovered from the solid waste stream for use in the form of raw materials in the manufacture of new products other than fuel for producing heat or power by combustion.

Sec. 208. ‘‘Waste prevention’’ means any change in the design, manufacturing, purchase, or use of materials or products (including packaging) to reduce their amount or toxicity before they are discarded. Waste prevention also refers to the reuse of products or materials.

Sec. 209. ‘‘Waste reduction’’ means preventing or decreasing the amount of waste being generated through waste prevention, recycling, or
purchasing recycled and environmentally preferable products.

Sec. 210. ‘‘Life cycle cost’’ means the amortized annual cost of a product, including capital costs, installation costs, operating costs,
maintenance costs, and disposal costs discounted over the lifetime of the product.

Sec. 211. ‘‘Life cycle assessment’’ means the comprehensive examination of a product’s environmental and economic aspects and potential
impacts throughout its lifetime, including raw material extraction, transportation, manufacturing, use, and disposal.

Sec. 212. ‘‘Pollution prevention’’ means ‘‘source reduction’’ as defined in the Pollution Prevention Act of 1990 (42 U.S.C. 13102), and other
practices that reduce or eliminate the creation of pollutants through: (a) increased efficiency in the use of raw materials, energy, water, or other
resources; or (b) protection of natural resources by conservation.

Sec. 213. ‘‘Biobased product’’ means a commercial or industrial product (other than food or feed) that utilizes biological products or
renewable domestic agricultural (plant, animal, and marine) or forestry materials.

Sec. 214. ‘‘Major procuring agencies’’ shall include any executive agency that procures over $50 million per year of goods and services.

When you were a child, do you remember those pictures of cute little koala bears poised up on a big piece of bamboo? Today, bamboo has become a lot more than just koala climbing post; it’s in our homes and growing in popularity every day because of its great environmental benefits!

If you’ve done any kitchen shopping recently, you may have noticed all of the bamboo utensils and kitchen accessories. In this form, bamboo looks and feels like regular wood, just a little more lightweight. However, bamboo is actually considered a wood-like grass. Once treated, it can become a very strong wood-like substance that can be used for a ton of great products.

Bamboo is becoming more heavily used because of its awesome environmental properties. For one thing, it is one of the fastest growing wood-like plants in the world, which means it can be an ever-renewable source for both luxuries like home décor, and even construction purposes. Bamboo has actually been reported to grow up to 25 inches in just 24 hours, so fast you could almost see it growing!

Another beneficial aspect of bamboo is its strength. Although it is extremely lightweight, bamboo is both flexible and strong, and many people actually use it for building as scaffolding and flooring. Both of these uses call for something durable, and something resilient enough to hold a lot of weight.

Bamboo, in some forms, is also edible. Bamboo shoots, which are tiny bamboo at its beginning growth stages, are often used in Chinese cooking. When cooked, it tends to absorb the flavors around it, but still retains a chewy texture.

Most woods are not resilient against water, and therefore cannot be used in conjunction to high-water areas without being treated to withstand water damage. Bamboo, however, keeps its strength and shape when wet, so it can be used as flooring in bathrooms where wood in uncommon, and even outside in rainy weather. This makes bamboo one of the most versatile wood-like products available!

Using bamboo in place of other woods can you help you continue in your green movement! Its versatility, sustainability, and renewability have made it a leading product in the environmentally friendly market.

Even with all the benefits of this woody grass, there’s still a lot to watch out for. The majority of bamboo used for production in the world is grown in Asia. This means that when it is transported to other countries, it may be moved using methods not approved by most green movements. Also, bamboo is sometimes treated with toxic chemicals in order to create the hard substance often used in homes today.

However, since most wood products are made using trees that do not grow nearly as quickly, and sometimes don’t even last very long, bamboo is still a leading green product that many environmentally friendly companies still choose to produce. This means that often the benefits of bamboo outweigh the problems.

If you have any questions about bamboo, or would like help finding the best bamboo products, contact us! You can send us an email by clicking on our “contact” tab near the top of the page!

Have you ever seen those little green seals on some bottles in the household products aisle? If you don’t know exactly what those mean, now is the time to learn! Many cleaning products are making the changes to adapt to the green standard, and these changes could help your company take steps towards becoming environmentally friendly.

In order for a cleaning product to wear the green seal, it actually has to measure up to the green standards set it place by Green Seal, an independent, nonprofit, organization. Environmental Preservation Solutions can help your company get certified by Green Seal!

In terms of household products, there are some standards that are important to know both as a consumer and as a business. Even though the incandescent light bulb switch is currently under some scrutiny, using CFL lights are still a green standard. In fact, to be considered a green seal light, the light must meet or exceed energy star requirements in addition to being tested by a nationally accredited testing facility.

If you’re looking for paper products that are the best for the environment, look for the green seal. In terms of actual paper, such as printer paper and writing paper, there are even standards for recycled versions. Recycled paper must have at least 30 percent post-consumer materials, and must be processed in an environmentally friendly way.

For household cleaning products, Green Standard even provides a checklist to determine whether or not a product is up to standards. These even go so far as to include what size the manufacturing facility is, and how many people work in it. Green cleaning products must also be tested for efficiency. In other words, they have to still clean as effectively as non-green products in order to receive a green seal.

For example, general purpose cleaners must be able to eliminate 80 percent of the tested dirt, while bathroom cleaners must remove at least 75 percent. Glass cleaners must pass the same testing as non-green products as well. This is to ensure that even though a product is considered green, it is still going to work once you get home and start scrubbing.

Perhaps one of the most important factors of green seal cleaning products is that they are also measured for toxicity. This means that if a product is considered toxic or highly toxic, Green Seal will not approve it. Having toxic products in a home is a huge health concern for many people, especially those with young children. Green seal does not approve of products with possible carcinogens, (products that may cause cancer) or products that can cause eye irritation. Many cleaning products are diluted with water for sale, but these tests are performed on the undiluted product to truly insure that it is safe.

I know what you’re thinking; laws are boring, they make me feel like I’m in school, can’t I just do my best at following them on my own? If you’re… Read more

I know what you’re thinking; laws are boring, they make me feel like I’m in school, can’t I just do my best at following them on my own? If you’re a business owner, or if you work for a company that you care about, don’t leave just yet!

You might not know this, but the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been cracking down on their laws and regulations more than ever, and that includes businesses small and large alike, so it’s more important than ever that you know the real standards that your business is being held to. You may be breaking an environmental law right now that you don’t even know about, so it’s important to get educated on the topic!

Let’s talk about a few recent laws you should definitely know about. The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 set regulations in place that greatly affected car companies, like an upped standard of fuel efficiency and technology. This act also included the lighting switch, which began the slow ban of standard light bulbs. This aspect of the law was supposed to be implemented by 2014, although it is currently under some scrutiny. To learn more about the lighting switch, check out our article on it here.

The EPA is also implementing new regulations on greenhouse gas emissions for industrial companies. This is particularly something to keep up on because it changes often. The EPA is working to find ways to lower these emissions and it has become a difficult change across our country. The regulations for CO2 emissions are ever-changing in order to make the transitions easier for companies.

Let’s move on to some green standards you may not be aware of. Thinking of building on your property? You definitely need to make sure you’re doing it the green way, not only to save yourself money and trouble in the future, but also to stay environmentally friendly! Many builders think that since they own the property, it doesn’t matter how or where they build on it. But you might have to verify that your land is fit for building in terms of being green, and that your building materials are up to par.

Visit the EPA website for questions that you have about making sure you follow the standards that apply to you. Many regulations vary by state, or even by industry. Most people don’t know everything there is because, well, most people don’t work for an agency like the EPA, who spends all their work time making efforts for the green movement.

If you ever have any questions about regulations in your area, or just don’t understand any EPA laws, feel free to contact Environmental Preservation Solutions! We can help your business run up to these standards, and run as green as possible!
